Between September and December 2025 we ran controlled A/B tests on 1,200 UK service-business websites using ScoreReview UK widgets against a no-widget control. Every business had at least 20 verified reviews going in. This is what actually moved conversion — with the numbers, the confidence intervals, and the surprises we did not expect.
Where to place the widget
Above the fold on the homepage lifted conversion by a median 8.3%. Above the primary CTA on service pages lifted it by 11.7%. In the footer only: no measurable lift. Placement matters more than styling, by a wide margin.
Star widget vs carousel vs wall
The compact star + count widget won on the homepage. The carousel won on service pages where visitors have decision intent. The full wall won on a dedicated /reviews page and killed conversion when embedded on landing pages — too much cognitive load.
- Homepage: compact star + count
- Service pages: three-review carousel above the CTA
- Reviews page: full wall with filters
- Landing pages: single testimonial pull-quote
The verification badge effect
Adding a visible 'Verified' badge to each review inside the widget lifted conversion by a further 4.1% on average, with a much larger 9.8% lift on high-ticket categories (legal, cosmetic, home improvement). Trust signals compound with price.
Widgets and Core Web Vitals
Third-party review widgets are the single most common cause of poor LCP scores on service-business sites. ScoreReview UK widgets ship as native web components from the edge, add under 12KB after compression, and defer image loading — none of the tested embeds regressed CWV.
Photo reviews vs text-only
Widgets that surface at least one photo review lifted conversion 6% over text-only variants. The uplift held across every sector except professional services, where photos are usually irrelevant.
Response visibility in the widget
Widgets that show the business reply below the review lifted conversion by 3.2% and — more importantly — cut refund-request rate by 14% in the follow-up 30 days. Buyers who see the business respond well complain less when things go wrong.
What did not work
Animated stars, auto-scrolling carousels, and pop-up review overlays all reduced conversion. Anything that steals attention from the primary CTA cost money in every single test cell.
FAQ
Which widget should I install first?
The compact homepage star widget. It is the smallest change and the biggest measured lift.
Do widgets emit schema?
Yes. Every ScoreReview UK widget emits Review and AggregateRating JSON-LD bound to the visible reviews so the same content earns rich results.

Really practical breakdown — the four-part reply structure is now on our till-side crib sheet. Thank you.

Went from 12 reviews to 47 in three months following almost exactly this playbook. It works.
