Cart abandonment is the single largest revenue leak in UK ecommerce. Trust signals at the checkout step — not the homepage — move the needle. A verified badge, correctly implemented, is the highest-ROI 100 lines of code most stores are missing.

The study — 340 UK stores, 90 days

Split test with badge on/off at the payment step. Median 9% checkout completion uplift. Categories with highest lift: home improvement (14%), electronics (11%), fashion (8%).

Why the payment step, not the homepage

Homepage trust signals are absorbed early and forgotten. Payment-step signals fire at the moment of hesitation. The card is out; the doubt is peaking. That is when trust does work.

What the badge must do

Click to expand — showing verification model, current rating, review count under 90 days old. A decorative badge that opens nothing performs worse than no badge (buyers try to click and get frustrated).

  • Payment step, not homepage
  • Clickable, expands to evidence
  • Live rating, not static image
  • Under 12KB, no CLS impact

Combining with PSD2 SCA friction

SCA friction is bad; a trust badge visible during 3-D Secure redirects reduces post-3DS abandonment by a further 3%. The badge tells the returning buyer they have not been phished.

FAQ

Which pages should show the badge?

Cart, payment step and post-purchase thank-you. Skip category pages — the noise costs more than the lift.

Does the badge affect Core Web Vitals?

Ours does not — under 12KB, edge-served, no layout shift. Test any competitor badge for CLS before shipping.

Really practical breakdown — the four-part reply structure is now on our till-side crib sheet. Thank you.

Went from 12 reviews to 47 in three months following almost exactly this playbook. It works.
