The local pack — the three-result map block above the standard organic results — captures roughly 42% of clicks for local-intent queries in our sample of UK service categories. Getting into it, and staying there, is worth more than most paid campaigns. This guide is the current, un-hyped playbook, updated for Google's 2025 local-ranking changes and the DMCC Act's transparency requirements.
The three local ranking factors that still dominate
Google's local ranking has always weighted three things: relevance, distance and prominence. In 2026 prominence — driven heavily by verified review count, recency and reply cadence — has grown at the expense of raw distance. A well-reviewed business three miles away now regularly out-ranks a barely-reviewed one two hundred metres from the searcher.
Google Business Profile hygiene
Complete every field. Add ten real photos, refresh three of them each quarter. Post an update fortnightly. Categorise precisely — a plumber that also does bathrooms picks primary 'Plumber' and secondary 'Bathroom remodeler', not both as primary.
- Primary category is your single biggest lever
- Complete the services list with real prices where possible
- Add opening hours for public holidays 12 months ahead
- Respond to Q&A within 24 hours
Review signals in the local pack
Local pack ranking correlates with review count under 90 days old more strongly than with lifetime count. A steady drip of 3–5 verified reviews a month beats a one-off push of 40. Recency compounds; batches decay.
NAP consistency across the web
Name, address and phone must match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, ScoreReview UK profile and every directory listing. A single mismatched suite number can suppress ranking for months. Audit annually with a spreadsheet.
Local link building without spam
The best local links come from real relationships — the chamber of commerce, the town-team sponsorship page, the community charity you actually support. Paid link networks in the local space are trivially detectable and increasingly penalised.
Content for micro-geographies
One deep page per service per town beats twenty thin pages per postcode. Genuine local content — 'we serviced the Grade II listed pumps at the Crown Hotel in Uttoxeter' — is unfakeable and ranks for years.
Measuring local performance
Track pack position for your top 20 service-plus-town queries weekly. Watch the trend, not the absolute — pack positions are personalised and noisy at a single point in time.
FAQ
How long before I see local pack movement?
Median time to first pack impression for a new profile with a healthy invitation flow is 90–120 days. Sustained top-three position typically arrives at 6–9 months.
Do off-platform reviews still count?
Yes — Google reads reviews from many surfaces, including verified platforms like ScoreReview UK, and cross-references them as a prominence signal.

Really practical breakdown — the four-part reply structure is now on our till-side crib sheet. Thank you.

Went from 12 reviews to 47 in three months following almost exactly this playbook. It works.
