Guest reviews are the single strongest booking driver for independent and small-chain hotels. Verified reviews outperform OTA reviews on trust and on schema-driven organic capture. This is the flow ScoreReview UK partners run at 30%+ submission rate.

Send at checkout, not at midnight

The invitation should trigger from the PMS at physical checkout, not from a batch job overnight. Same-hour invitations convert 2× overnight-batch ones.

Name the room and the person on the desk

Personalisation beats subject-line tricks. 'Thanks for staying in Room 204, Jamie was glad to check you out' converts far above the generic template.

Photo reviews for hotels are gold

Room, view, breakfast — surfaced in the widget and the OTA cross-listing, photo reviews carry the buying decision. Prompt for photos in the second invitation touch, not the first.

  • Same-hour first touch
  • Photo prompt on reminder
  • Reply within 24h to every review
  • Never respond publicly to allegations of theft or safety

Handling complaints about the property vs the stay

Property issues (broken lift, noisy road) require a factual reply and a fix commitment. Stay issues (rude staff, wrong room) require a personal apology and an offer to make it right. Do not mix the two response registers.

FAQ

Should reviews go to Google or ScoreReview first?

ScoreReview first (verified provenance), then invite Google as an optional second touch. Bookings-page schema pulls from both.

Do OTAs allow linking to a verified review platform?

Booking.com and Expedia currently do not allow external review links. Use your own site and email footers instead.

Really practical breakdown — the four-part reply structure is now on our till-side crib sheet. Thank you.

Went from 12 reviews to 47 in three months following almost exactly this playbook. It works.
