The General Dental Council's guidance on advertising and testimonials is stricter than most practices realise. Verified reviews are permitted and encouraged — clinical claims from reviewers are not. This is the compliant flow.
What GDC allows
Genuine patient reviews of the experience — reception, comfort, aftercare, value. Reviews may not make clinical claims ('cured my TMJ') on behalf of the practice.
The invitation template that stays compliant
Ask about the experience, not the clinical outcome. 'How did we look after you today?' beats 'How is your new smile?' every time.
Reply carefully to clinical mentions
If a reviewer names a treatment or a condition, the reply must not confirm or elaborate — that becomes an unregulated clinical statement. Thank, invite them back, do not diagnose in public.
- Invitation asks about experience, not outcome
- No before/after photos in review requests
- Reply thanks and refers offline for clinical detail
- Named clinician requires their own consent
Reviews and Google's healthcare policies
Google's health-content quality guidelines weight review recency and reply rate heavily for medical categories. A compliant, active review profile is one of the strongest signals a dental practice can send.
FAQ
Can I offer a discount for a review?
No — GDC treats incentivised reviews as inducements, which is a specific breach. Ask, do not incentivise.
What about photo reviews?
Only with explicit, separate written consent for image use — never as part of the review submission itself.

Really practical breakdown — the four-part reply structure is now on our till-side crib sheet. Thank you.

Went from 12 reviews to 47 in three months following almost exactly this playbook. It works.
